About Emmalynn Herbstritt
Emmalynn Herbstritt began her hockey adventure at the age of 7 with Learn-to-Skate and then Start Smart at the Murray Ice rink. She fell in love with hockey and moved through the Salt Lake County program, to the Oval, Jr Grizzlies, Lady Lightning, and then to Utah Lady Grizz. Emmalynn participated in Utah High School Hockey by playing for Brighton High for a year and then, after a family move, for East High for three years. Upon graduating from East in 2019, she went to Northern Michigan University (NMU) to play as a Lady Wildcat. The Lady Wildcats qualified for Nationals in Spring of 2020, but the event was cancelled due to the global epidemic. During Covid she served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Originally, she was called to Canada Montreal, French Speaking, but was reassigned to Idaho Falls where she was able to serve for nine months in Salmon, Idaho. Emmalynn had visited Salmon a handful of times as a young hockey player to compete on their outdoor rink. Emmalynn loved the speed and physicality of hockey. We believe she even loved the smell of it. Although she finished at the collegiate level on a woman’s team, she loved playing co-ed high school hockey that allowed for some amazing mid-ice checks. The crowd would always go wild after a hit where the bigger player went down and she would whip her braid around as she skated on to the next play. She worked hard to fine tune her hockey skills. Officially she was a defensemen, but in her heart she loved the goalie position. She never let an opportunity pass to step in front of the puck, as a goalie would, but without the pads. Bruises from the puck were badges of honor! She was also passionate about life off the ice. She loved learning and reading. During high school, she earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award for receiving a score of 3 or higher on five or more AP exams. She participated in the National Honors Society and the school yearbook. She chose to attend NMU as she was pursuing a study in Forensics and they had an outdoor cadaver lab. She hoped to play a part in making the world a safer place. After her year at NMU and her mission, she spoke frequently about giving back to the local hockey community. She wanted to coach young, beginner hockey players. She was excited to share her passion of hockey with the next generation of hockey players. Throughout her short life she always looked for opportunities to serve those around her. She believed in pushing hard for excellence in hockey as well as being well-rounded off the ice.
Emmalynn secured employment in Moab, Utah for the summer and fall of 2022. She was able to lead groups of tourists on canyoneering and whitewater rafting adventures. She loved helping people push their limits and see personal growth. It was during one of these canyoneering tours that she fell to her death. She loved life and made every effort to live it to the fullest.

About Tim Hixson
Tim was a great young man who loved the game of hockey. He was a natural athlete who played many sports well. Hockey was his main love. Tim enjoyed the contact and though he was never the biggest guy on the ice, he chose to play defense. His style of play was of total and complete abandon - throwing his body into every play.
Whether checking, taking a hit or stopping a slap shot with his body he gave everything he had on every play. Many an opposing defensemen, standing a full head taller, made the mistake of underestimating Tim. They often ended up on the ice wondering what had happened.
On the evening of March 26, 1982, in his 22nd year of life, Tim was on his way to pick up a date when a drunken driver swerved into him and took his life. His life was tragically ended at time when it should have just begun. So that he will always be remembered, his family established the Tim Hixson Memorial Scholarship Award in his name.
