Executive Director Position Description

Organization: Utah High School Hockey
Position Title: Executive Director
Reports To: UHSH Board of Trustees
Classification: Part-Time Exempt Contractor/Employee, as approved by the Board
Compensation: $15,000–$30,000 annually, based on qualifications, experience, and annual Board approval
Term: Serves at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees and is subject to annual performance review


Position Purpose

The Executive Director serves as the chief administrative officer of Utah High School Hockey and is responsible for implementing Board-approved policies, managing day-to-day operations, supporting volunteers and committees, ensuring compliance with governing organizations, and advancing the mission and growth of high school hockey in Utah.

The Executive Director does not establish organizational policy. Governance authority remains with the UHSH Board of Trustees.


Primary Responsibilities

League Operations

The Executive Director is responsible for managing the daily administration and operational needs of Utah High School Hockey, including:

  • Coordinating league registration, scheduling, communications, and operational activities

  • Supporting playoff, all-star, and championship events

  • Maintaining organizational records and operational procedures

  • Coordinating with member programs, coaches, officials, and volunteers

  • Supporting the overall administration of UHSH programs and events


Governance Support

The Executive Director supports the UHSH Board of Trustees and related committees by:

  • Implementing policies adopted by the Board of Trustees

  • Supporting Board and Executive Committee meetings

  • Providing recommendations regarding league operations and strategic initiatives

  • Assisting committees in completing assigned responsibilities

  • Maintaining and updating administrative procedures as directed by the Board


Financial Oversight

The Executive Director assists with financial administration and oversight by:

  • Supporting preparation of the annual budget

  • Monitoring revenues and expenditures

  • Ensuring timely financial reporting through the Treasurer

  • Supporting fundraising and sponsorship activities

  • Ensuring financial controls and reporting processes are followed


Compliance and Risk Management

The Executive Director helps ensure UHSH remains compliant with applicable governing organizations and league requirements, including:

  • USA Hockey

  • Utah Amateur Hockey Association

  • Rocky Mountain District

  • UHSH policies and procedures

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing registration, background screening, SafeSport, and coaching certification processes

  • Maintaining insurance documentation and certificates of insurance

  • Coordinating incident reporting and risk management activities

  • Monitoring league eligibility and operational compliance requirements


Stakeholder Relations

The Executive Director serves as a primary administrative contact and representative of UHSH by:

  • Communicating with parents, coaches, school representatives, sponsors, and governing organizations

  • Supporting communication efforts through the website, email, social media, and meetings

  • Representing UHSH at designated meetings and events

  • Supporting fundraising and sponsorship initiatives


Leadership and Growth

The Executive Director supports the long-term growth and sustainability of high school hockey in Utah by:

  • Identifying opportunities for operational improvement

  • Supporting program expansion and league development

  • Recruiting and supporting volunteers, committee members, and organizational partners

  • Helping advance the mission of Utah High School Hockey


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 21

  • Good standing with USA Hockey

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively with volunteers, coaches, parents, and governing organizations


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • Hockey administration experience

  • Nonprofit leadership experience

  • USA Hockey coaching or volunteer experience

  • Knowledge of Utah youth and high school hockey
